Music videos are an invaluable part of the music industry and have provided the world with shock and scandal over the years. From ‘Wrecking Ball’ to ‘Famous’ artists have spoiled us with the delights of their creations. Music videos can also be a key source of outfit inspiration and whilst some outfits might seem crazy (who can forget ‘Oops I did it again’?) often the trends shown in videos can be easily emulated in your own wardrobe. Below is a round up of current music videos and how to recreate the looks within them.
- Ariana Grande- 7 Rings
Ariana Grande is continuing her domination of the music industry and the release of her latest album is going down a storm. The music video for 7 Rings appears very glamourous and over the top in terms of outfits, but a key look to recreate is where Ariana is dancing outside of the house. Pink cargo trousers teamed with killer heels and a glittery jacket seem very full on for your 9ams, but pairing cargo trousers with a satin shirt and your favourite white trainers would be a look fit for Soho. Misguided have an amazing selection of cargo trousers and Pretty Little Thing are well stocked in satin shirts to bring this look together.
- Mabel – Don’t Call Me Up
The outfit in this video is arguably the most wearable. Teaming a red/orange 3/4 zip up top with blue joggers and a headband make a relaxed yet stylish campus look. In the video Mabel’s headband match her trousers so make sure your headband compliments the colours you have chosen. If two bright colours is too full on for an everyday outfit, switch out one of the colours with a muted tone such as black or grey. SheIn have a wide selection of 3/4 zip up tops and at a great, student friendly price point. Boohoo have a large range of joggers to choose though if you are looking for quality, Topshop is the way to go.
- Billie Eilish- when the party’s over
Billie Eilish is something of a phenomenon and has provided the world with incredible songs. To make her achievements even more impressive, Billie is only 17, making her younger than us students! Her outfit in this video is great for showcasing how powerful and stylish a one colour outfit can be. In order to recreate this all white outfit, you should pair together an oversized white top with white loungewear leggings/joggers. For maximum effect make sure the white of each garment perfectly match! To make sure it doesn’t look like you have shown up to lectures in your pyjamas, this outfit should be paired with a variety of accessories such as long necklaces and matching earrings/bracelets. Topshop do great jewellery sets to complete this look.
Overall music videos are continuing to provide us with memorable looks to inspire the fashion world. Although many looks might not seem wearable, there are easy ways to tone down the look of the music video or simply be inspired by the colour combinations, mixtures of fabrics and garments worn in the video. Whilst you won’t be seeing any students walking into the Robbo in Britney’s iconic red catsuit, you may see students on a night out in vinyl skirt or red trousers. And if all else fails, use the looks for Halloween!
