Developers of 2020s action game Ghosts of Tshushima, Nate Fox and Jason Connel, have been appointed official tourism ambassadors of the real life Tshushima island.

According the VGC, the ceremony to appoint Fox and Connel as permanent ambassadors will be held virtually due to coronavirus restrictions. Once travel restrictions have been lifted, mayor of Tshushima, Hiroki Hitakatsu, has spoken about inviting the pair alongside the Sucker Punch development team to the island.

Speaking of their appointment, Mayor Hitakatsu added that "“Even a lot of Japanese people do not know the history of the Gen-ko period. When it comes to the world, the name and location of Tsushima is literally unknown, so I cannot thank them enough for telling our story with such phenomenal graphics and profound stories.”

“I did not appoint them for the purpose of having them do anything in the future. Thanks to the two of them, Sucker Punch Productions, and SIE, I have heard from people all over the world who have learned about Tsushima through their works, and now want to see, know, and go to Tsushima.” (VGC).

A tourism campaign based on the video game is also reported to be in the works, with Sony Interactive Entertainment on board, in order to encourage fans of the videogame to come and visit the island in real-life and learn about its history (NME). Sony are also reportedly seeking a narrative writer who specialises in Feudal Japan. Could this be a sign of a sequel game? Only time will tell. This is another achievement in an ever-growing list for Tsushima and its developers. It sold 2.4 million copies worldwide in its first three days, breaking records, and won The Game Awards’ fan voted Player's Voice Award late last year, as well as Best Art Direction.
