Icon of the Week: Janelle Monae

Written by Beauty

The Electric Lady. The Queen. The Dirty Computer. Otherwise known as the American singer-songwriter, actor, producer – Janelle Monae. She really can do it all. The impact and influence Monaé has in the beauty is not often recognised as focus tends to turn to her fierceless fashion looks that leave us all in awe. But as a Janelle Monae stan, I feel it necessary to sing her praises and shed light on the impact she really does have on beauty looks.

Janelle Monaé oozes effortless and natural beauty, which is reflected in her makeup looks, mainly consisting of just  a solid eyeliner and a pop of colour of the eyelids and lips. The looks are never too heavy and normally one is left questioning if she’s wearing make-up at all. Her lips are normally framed and adorned in a luscious lathering of red lipstick or a shade of a similar hue, perfectly complimenting her rich skin tone. To be honest, I have always been skeptical yet in admiration of black women that can rock a red lipstick and when I see it on Monae, I am always inspired to give it a go and see what works for me.

So let’s talk hair. Janelle Monae really knows how to rock a hair accessory! She rarely has the same hairstyle for more than a few months and has been seen wearing white paper clips, googly eyes and flowers studded throughout her puffs. Her ability to fashion and style hair accessories with textured hair is inspiring as it is not common to see these looks on black women. We also can not ignore Monae’s ability to serve a look with a hat. Hats are notoriously difficult to style and suit, but she does so with ease. From a wide brim fedora to a cute beret, to the black-panther inspired headpieces.

Monae shows the versatility of hair bling and that less really is more, it’s all in the details.
