Newcastle University Athletic Union Officer Benthe Tanghe has announced that, through November and the start of December, there will be no university sport.

This decision has come after a second national lockdown was announced from 5 November to 2 December, with Tier 4 restrictions announced throughout England and all non-essential leisure activities postponed. This will include the University gym and it’s facilities.

However, the only exception is Newcastle University Basketball Team firsts, as they are classed as elite and are therefore allowed to continue within the current restrictions.

Benthe had this to say on the announcement:

“Unfortunately I have to inform you all that all in-person club activities will be paused from 5 November, in line with the new restrictions.”

“It is safe to say that this year has been quite a rollercoaster for all of us. We knew this year was going to be different and difficult, but this new lockdown is especially challenging. As mentioned before, I’d really want to encourage all [Newcastle Sports Clubs] to try and be active online to stay in contact with your members as much as possible.”

“I know this isn’t the preferred way for many, as it isn’t mine. However, we have to take our responsibility as Team Newcastle and set an example by adhering to the guidelines that are put in place.”

Many specialists have been quick to comment on the government’s response to university sport, which is often confusing and misguided. Jim Dickinson, who advises SUs across the nation, pointed out the exemption that sport should be having from postponement, given that it is in an educational setting.

However, the Department of Education has suggested ‘education’ should refer to formal teaching. As Jim points out so wisely, “education isn’t just sitting in a classroom and facing the front.”

One can only hope Newcastle sport will be back to it’s winning ways sooner rather than later.
