NUSU launches houmous and pita bar

Written by Latest, News

A new vegan café has opened on the top floor of the Students’ Union. Humpit, a hummus and pita bar which has branches in Leeds, York and Sheffield, opened its doors at the start of Freshers’ Week. The company, which won the Virgin food start-up award in 2015, was approached by Newcastle University to offer students a healthier option in their SU. “It was a great opportunity,” says Humpit co-owner and founder, Jonathan Phillips. “Students are making healthier choices, they’re drinking less, trying to eat more healthily. More and more students are becoming vegan and veggie, and obviously all of our food is vegan.” The café offers large portions of houmous bowls, houmous and falafel-filled pitas, and salads, all priced at £4.50. They also serve fresh lemonade and Humpit iced tea. “We’re finding it really good at the moment,” says Philips. “The food quality and the price is great. We’re hoping it will gain even more popularity in the coming weeks.”
