Quick, cheap and satisfying meals for lunchtime

On a budget but the Robbo café sandwiches aren’t really doing it for you? We’ve filtered through some of Newcastle’s most popular lunch spots within a short walk from campus….

When it comes to meal deals we all know that Tesco’s is pretty hard to beat, especially when you can get a Naked smoothie, sandwich and a packet of crisps for just £3! But what about somewhere a bit closer to uni? Known only by some, Boots offer a pretty banging lunchtime deal. For just 39p more than Tesco, Boots has a huge range – from chicken katsu sandwiches to flatbreads, wraps and sushi. Boots gives you everything you could ask for in a meal deal.

Greggs is a staple. And in Newcastle you can’t really go anywhere without being just minutes from one. Greggs boasts some cracking student deals; with any sandwich lunch deal you’ll also be spoilt with a free sausage roll or sweet treat when you present your student card.

Lunchtime doesn’t get any cheaper than Eat4less. Here, a £1.75 meal deal is not too good to be true. Whilst the food might not quite be Michelin star, Eat4less pretty much does what it says on the tin.

If you’re ravenous between lectures, then Frankie and Tony’s sandwich bar is a local favourite for generous on-the-go food. Frankie and Tony’s is hidden away on Ridley place, just a 5 minute walk from campus. However, one should expect big portions and an even larger queue, there is a reason this sandwich bar is so busy!

Love Wagamama, just not a fan of the price? Tucked away in Haymarket station is Newcastle’s hidden gem, Shijo. Here, you can always rely on speedy service with a smile. No matter if you’re splashing out on a hearty yakisoba or katsu curry or just after a quick snack with some £1.50 spring rolls, Shijo will always satisfy lunchtime hunger. What’s even better? Shijo is now opening a store in the SU!

Pushed for time between lectures and don’t fancy the lunch rush in town? The new Humpit bar at the top of the SU is perfect for a quick lunchtime snack. Not only is the bar completely vegan, but it’s also relatively cheap and very filling, offering hefty filled pita’s and salads for £4.50 and snacks from just 50p.
