September 22, 8pm – the hour that stimulated either national joy from the return of The Great British Bake Off or frustration from the Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s televised address. In the midst of the pandemic, dare I say pandemonium, the bakers did not fail in rising to the occasion!

7.9 million people tuned into Channel 4 to watch the first episode of the eleventh series of The Great British Bake Off. This was Channel 4’s biggest broadcast of the year so far and the biggest GBBO viewership since the finale in 2018. Despite the outrage when it moved from BBC to Channel 4, it is evidently still a much-loved show that tickles everyone’s fondant fancy!

Lucas cleverly made a parody of the original ‘Stay alert’ slogan: ‘Stay alert, protect cake, save loaves.’

There is muffin we love more to see on our screens than the bakers battling it out each week for the ultimate recognition from judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood: star baker! GBBO may sound like any other baking competition – the soggy bottoms in technical and show-stopper bakes cannot be denied – alas it is like none other due to its profusive use of innuendos and puns that have all of us cracking up.

Matt Lucas impersonated Boris Johnson as he wore a blonde wig and briefed a baking-themed press conference, in which Lucas cleverly made a parody of the original ‘Stay alert’ slogan: ‘Stay alert, protect cake, save loaves.’ Egg-cellent stuff!

Suffice to say we could all tag Covid-19 and our 2020 plans when baker Sura toppled fellow baker Dave’s pineapple upside-down cakes onto the ground (does that make it a right side up cake?). Both took an unanticipated turn for the worse, nevertheless compliments to the bakers for giving us the positive kick we all kneaded!
