Ever since Anne Hathaway donned a pair of cigarette jeans and some knee high boots in The Devil Wears Prada we’ve all been just a tad obsessed with skinny jeans. Who doesn’t own multiple pairs of super skinny denims right now? Over the last few seasons we’ve seen the girlfriend jean and the boot cut jean attempt to overthrow the Queen of denim, but to no avail. This year though, we’ve already seen our favourite celebs styling some alternatives to the skinny. Here we’ll examine the new denim trends and see if there are any that might coax us out of our trusty skinnies.
More wearable than the standard Boyfriend jean that has been hovering in the periphery the last few seasons, these jeans are a skinny/boyfriend hybrid. The best ones come in an already worn material, and they’ll look great in lighter shades of blue with plenty of rips. The key is to make sure you grab some in a fit that makes them look as though you accidently shrunk your boyfriend’s jeans and decided to wear them yourself. The Hayden Boyfriend Jeans from Topshop (£42) are perfect and come in a longer length for those of us who struggle to find jeans to sit below our ankles. Style with strappy heels and an oversized, v-neck top and your trusty biker jacket with a strong lip for evening. Or, wear with a tight fitting crop and trainers for day time.
2. The Culottes
Culottes are the everyday equivalent of the girl you see on the metro whose outfit you want to steal. A bit intimidating, perhaps unapproachable, but above all – very cool. If you’re brave enough to give the new kid on the block a whirl, then black denim is your best friend. It hides a multitude of sins and makes even the simplest of outfits look polished. Pair with a Breton stripe tee and you’re good to go!
3. The Flared Jeans
The Seventies trend has well and truly taken over, from unbuttoned, patterned shirts and floppy hats to suede pencil skirts and cord jackets, the high-street has been awash with seventies inspired looks since last summer. The trend is here to stay and now is the perfect time to be just a little braver than any previous brushes with the seventies so far. Step away from the printed shirt that can be easily hidden beneath your jacket, it’s time to give the flared jean a try. This pair from Only at ASOS (£35) have a high waist and are therefore incredibly flattering. The deep shade of blue is perfect for being dressed up with a loose shirt, unbuttoned with a flash of lacy bralette for a more relaxed night out. Plus, if you wear a pair of sky-high heels it will appear that your legs go on forever!
Still not ready for a change?
Then keep your skinny jeans up to date with a dark indigo colour, an ankle grazer length and a high waist fit. The MOTO Jamie Jeans in mid-blue from Topshop will look great with a chunky sandal for spring, a nude heel for nights out, or a snake-skin runner for day time. They come in a stretch fit so will keep their shape and carry you through until next season.
After all, if it isn’t broken, why fix it?
