On one hand, it makes sense to not purchase something if you don't want to support the values of whoever makes it, or the actions of the company. But the overarching implication, especially on sites like Reddit, that it's the be-all, end-all of whether someone is taking action or not is overly simplified.
While participating in a consumer boycott is a good starting point, these actions rarely, if ever, change company or organization policies. No matter how many people stop watching Marvel movies because of the negative sociopolitical implications of a film they made, they still have a large enough fanbase to bring in millions of dollars per film. In order to be effective, activists need to actively contact companies and organizations asking for change on a larger level, and support alternative media, products or services that don't have the same issues, or are at least trying to be better.

Activists also need to understand that you can't really apply this logic to everything. For instance, an entirely vegan world is impossible and would cause issues of its own. It would make more sense to focus on making the way meat is sourced more sustainable and encourage people who can afford to do so to eat less meat, like most people did hundreds of years ago. This also avoids the issue of alienating disabled people who can't go vegan from the environmental movement. Treating large, many-layered environmental issues like something that can be fixed with consumer boycott-like action fails to consider where the problem is actually coming from.
It's also important for people to start movements in their own communities to deal with issues on a local level
Lastly, activists need to realize that it's not all about targeting specific companies, while that is important. It's also important for people to start movements in their own communities to deal with issues on a local level. This often brings in people who might not get involved with a large-scale political movement, but who can make necessary resources available, take care of the local environment and start projects like community gardens. Simply avoiding certain products doesn't lead to the connections and community between like-minded people that is necessary to make movements succeed.
