Unlike horror gaming giant Resident Evil, Silent Hill has only ever had two film adaptations: Silent Hill (2006) and Silent Hill: Revelations (2012). Both of these films were directed by Christophe Gans who is returning for the new instalment. Gans fought to gain the rights for five years before sending a video interview to Japanese game company Komani to explain his passion for the video games and his plans for adapting them. Unlike Resident Evil which seems to botch every single adaptation (come on guys, the games are right there!), the first Silent Hill film has been praised for how accurate it is to the video game and evoking the sense of fear the games do. Revelations however received predominately negative reviews, suffering the same fate that many 3D horrors of that time did. Other 3D horrors that came out in the late 00s and early 2010s such as The Final Destination (2009) and Saw: The Final Chapter (2010) have often been criticised for the CGI and over the top gore for the sake of making it 3D.
At Konami's October special presentation, Gans provided a director's statement and shared concept art for Return to Silent Hill, which will be inspired by the Silent Hill 2 game. Victor Hadida, one of the producers for the original 2006 film, joined Gans with a statement that the goal for the film is to "make it modern, but also very true to the video game". When elaborating on the plot for the film, Hadida compared it to the myth of Orpheus who travelled into the Underworld to get his deceased wife back. The film will follow James Sunderland who enters the creepy town after receiving a letter from his wife who has been deceased for three years.
Return to Silent Hill is only in the early stages of development and we are yet to get any casting announcements or a release date, but it is most likely a few years away.
