The original The Lost Boys is set in "the murder capital of the world" -vampire-infested Santa Carla - and centres on Michael and Sam Emerson who move there with their mother. They find themselves drawn into the world of vampires (and half-vampires) - which Michael himself becomes one - and the lovable vampire hunters Edgar and Alan Frog. Over the years, the film has become known as a cult classic that shaped the portrayal of modern vampires as youthful and alluring.
Following the success of the original film, director Schumacher tried for many years to get a direct-to-DVD The Lost Girls made but was ultimately unsuccessful. Two direct-to-DVD sequels were later released in 2008 (Lost Boys: The Tribe) and 2010 (Lost Boys: The Thirst), with Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander returning as the Frog brothers. Both of these films hold 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. The series also spawned two comic book mini-series - the 2008 Lost Boys: Reign of Frogs which served as a prequel to Lost Boys: The Tribe, and the 2016 The Lost Boys which featured the characters of Michael, Sam and Star as well as the Frog Brothers.
In 2016, The CW was announced to be producing a television adaptation of The Lost Boys as a seven-episode anthology series. However, by September 2021 it was announced that production is not going to continue, having had the initial pilot scrapped and deciding not to keep all but two of the cast.
A musical is also currently in the works, seeking to answer how the Lost Boys became the Lost Boys. Gerard McMahon, who composed the iconic "Cry Little Sister" track for the film, indicated in 2020 that it should premiere in 2022. Obviously, that has not been the case and news has been quiet about the musical for a while.
In 2021, it was announced that Warner Bros was doing a reboot of the vampire classic with Jonathan Entwistle set to direct. Entwistle has previously worked as producer on I Am Not Okay With This (2020) and The End of The F***ing World (2017-2019). Randy McKinnon is set to write, also working on the Static Shock series for Warner Bros. Noah Jupe and Jaeden Martell are set to star and have featured in horrors before. Jupe appeared in A Quiet Place (2018) and it's sequel in 2021. Martell starred as young Bill Denbrough in the 2017 and 2019 IT adaptations and more recently Mr Harrigan's Phone (clearly attracted to Stephen King adaptations). In a recent interview for the latter film which was released on Netflix this autumn, Martell couldn't share much about The Lost Boys remake: "It's a very mysterious project".
For now, it seems there is little news and will probably be that way for a while. Will The Lost Boys remake live up to the original? Unlikely. But will it overcome the fate of so many proposed remakes and make it out of production? I guess we will wait and see.
