Whether it was the infamous bacon dress that Lady Gaga wore to the VMAs, the time Kanye stormed the stage during a Taylor Swift acceptance speech, or the time Nicki Minaj called out Miley Cyrus live on stage (a personal favourite of mine), popstars have long been symbols for pop culture, the good and the bad. It is no revelation that in more recent years pop stars have become more image-conscious and we’ve seen less of these bold moments which are ingrained into pop culture forever.

Enter Reneé Rapp. If you haven’t heard of her then it’s time to get to know her. Recently, she has embarked on what some would call a pretty chaotic press tour, for her newest movie ‘Mean Girls: The Musical’. Rapp starred in the musical on Broadway as the iconic Regina George in 2019 and 2020, before the COVID pandemic closed it down. She is now taking the world by storm throughout this press tour for the movie. Her fast humor, wild answers, and ability to create an unhinged moment have created a large stir online. This has left many people asking - where is her media training?

Not only is her larger-than-life personality captivating people around the world, but so is her music. She recently released her debut album ‘Snow Angel’, a deeply personal rendition of the recent years of her life. The album is a must-listen for any pop music fans out there. You also may have heard of her hit single ‘Too Well’ from her debut EP Everything to Everyone. But of course, her music is just the beginning.

Since 2021 Rapp has also starred in ‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’ as Leighton Murray, a first-year student at Essex College. She is nothing short of iconic in this show too, with Leighton having quick one-liners as well as a brilliant character arc. This transition from acting to music is reminiscent of some of the major music artists of the 2010s. I can’t help but wonder, is Reneé Rapp the rebirth of iconic pop stars?

But what lies ahead for Reneé? I’m hopeful that she’ll see a glittering career as one of tomorrow's greatest pop artists. More importantly though, perhaps she will usher back in a golden era of popstars, where chaotic moments are the norm. After all, I feel like we deserve another golden era of pop music. One thing is for sure, Rapp is proving to viewers and listeners around the world that she’s not to be messed with, and she’s here to stay.
