20 years after the final episode of Friends aired, the beloved character Rachel Green continues to influence our sense of style daily.

Despite many of her looks being over two decades old, they all still hit just as hard today, and I think many of us would do just about anything to be able to get access to Rachel Green’s wardrobe.

With the mass digital reach of fashion space today, it feels impossible to keep up with the fleeting microtrends that circulate every month. For those unfamiliar, microtrends are fashion fads that are subject to an extreme surge in popularity before completely losing relevancy just as quickly – thanks for that, TikTok!

In direct contrast to this, the relevancy of Rachel Green’s wardrobe has lasted decades, despite the ever-changing nature of the contemporary moment. This is largely because she makes use of timeless classics, such as black miniskirts, oversized sweaters, block colours, and plaid – all of which remain staples in many of our wardrobes today. Many of her iconic looks are simply a combination of well-fitting basics that are easy to re-create.

The way she styles these clothes means that despite her outfits’ simplicity, they are never boring. Her looks almost always have an element of layering incorporated into them too, keeping the often ‘basic’ pieces interesting and adding dimension.

My personal favourite Rachel Green look is the now famous strapless yellow embroidered dress that she wore in season 5, episode 2. Friends stylist Debra McGuire even stated that it was her favourite outfit she styled on the show, according to her interview with Bustle).

With iconic lines like, “if you destroy a coat like this, I mean, that is like a crime against nature” and even a hairstyle named after her, Rachel Green was always destined to go down in history as a fashion icon.

If you want to dress like Rachel Green, here are some tips to consider:

1). Invest in classic, ‘basic’ pieces.

2). The base of your outfit should be mainly neutrals, but don’t be afraid to add a touch of colour or patterns.

3). Layer, layer, layer!!
