As we all flood back to our beloved Toon after a summer of sun-soaked travels, it is only fair that we have something new and exciting to look forward to as we settle back into uni life.

After delving deeper into Newcastle’s latest dining locations, I am pleased to say my excitement for new cuisine has been rekindled and my list of must-visit eateries has grown much longer. Now, whether you are new to the city or are returning after a well-deserved break, here are the top 4 new arrivals that the Toon has to offer your taste buds this autumn.

  1. Stack

After the demolition of the previous Northumberland Street box park in 2022, our prayers have been answered as we are blessed with the re-opening of the new and improved Stack, perfectly positioned next to our beloved St. James’s Park. With an astounding selection of restaurants including the well-loved Greek cuisine of Acropolis and firm favourite Brack Burger (enjoyed by those who have visited the branches in Tynemouth and Jesmond), they have got you covered. Whether you have the post-match munchies or fancy a mouth-watering wrap from the cleverly named Holy Duck, Newcastle’s cherished STACK IS BACK! With live music, good vibes and plenty of space to have drinks with friends, this is a must-try.

  1. Mowgli

After falling in love with this Indian street food hub when visiting its flagship in Liverpool, I am delighted to hear of the opening of Mowgli’s newest branch on Nelson Street this autumn. Though initially a barrister, CEO of Mowgli, Nisha Katona thought it was time to spread her love of the Indian kitchen, bringing a vibrant menu highlighting "the way Indians eat at home and on their streets". The perfect combo of delightfully soft puri, the ultimate Indian celebration bread, and the "velvety sweet" Mowgli Paneer Curry is a definite winner to satisfy my cravings. However, a jaw-dropper for me has to be the tantalising Yoghurt Chat Bombs with their thin, crispy casings bursting with tamarind, spiced yoghurt and coriander. Head over whenever you’re in need of bold exploration and exciting new flavours.

  1. Knoops

Perhaps not somewhere to have lunch or dinner, though "sweet tooths" out there may think otherwise, Knoops is a place of pure imagination. Sure to be a Wonka lover’s dream, this luxury hot chocolate cafe, initially opened in East Sussex, is sure to get you through any post-summer blues. With 21 types of chocolate to choose from, including vegan options, a silky hot cocoa from here is likely to be "sweet treat" must-visit, though I must warn you, it isn’t so budget-friendly, ranging between £3.50 and £8 per cup. Set to open in October conveniently opposite Grey’s Monument, the Knoops concept is centred around the cocoa percentage of each product offering "chocolates to suit every taste and mood". As if it couldn’t get any more decadent, you will also be able to add exotic flavourings such as star anise, black pepper and lavender into your chocolatey creations. Overall a place to make note of when needing a pick-me-up as the rainy days close in this autumn.

  1. Wendys

Now, to keep in with our newly laid out student budgets, Bigg Market is expected to be welcoming a glimpse into our Western bestie’s love for greasy grub. Home to rich and creamy frosties, spicy nuggets and the famous square burger, one of the USA’s leading fast-food chains, Wendy’s, is due to nab a spot on one of the busiest streets for quick bites. Following on from a boogie in Flares or an eventful crawl through the clubs of Newcastle, Wendy’s is sure to provide the rejuvenating meal needed to help you get home at 3 am. After having my fill in its homeland, I am intrigued to see what it has in store for the UK’s post-club snack lovers. Planned to be open 24 hours, 7 days a week, this new addition is sure to set hearts racing, whether from excitement or dangerously addictive combos, it doesn’t matter. With a love for mouth-watering deals and cheap nosh, Wendy’s is sure to be a popular pit-stop of Bigg Market when it ultimately arrives.
