In honour of the 2026 Winter Olympics set to be the most gender-balanced in history with 47% female participation, let’s take a look at the legendary women who have defined the Games with their remarkable performances over the years.

Marit Bjørgen has forever solidified her place in the cross-country skiing hall of fame. Norway’s star athlete has accumulated an astonishing 15 Olympic medals, including eight golds, making her the 3rd most decorated Olympian in history.

Speed skating has seen incredible achievements from both Ireen Wüst and Arianna Fontana. Wüst, representing the Netherlands, has ruled long-track speed skating, winning five Olympic golds with 13 medals in total. Italy’s Fontana has made her mark achieving the world record for most short-track speed skating Olympic medals won by a woman with a phenomenal 11 wins.

In skeleton, Amy Williams became a household name after winning gold at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, securing Britain’s first individual Winter Olympic champion in 30 years and the first female gold medallist in 58 years, an achievement that made her a national hero and female icon in British history.

Jamie Anderson made history as the first female snowboarder to win more than one Olympic title

As for snowboarding, America takes the cake with Chloe Kim becoming the countries sensation by winning the Olympic gold in the snowboard halfpipe at only 17 years old during the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, becoming the youngest woman to ever claim gold in the sport. Additionally, Jamie Anderson made history as the first female snowboarder to win more than one Olympic title, establishing herself as a key figure in the sport.

Figure skating has been blessed with two exceptional women, Yuna Kim and Peggy Fleming. South Korea’s Kim enchanted the ice with her graceful performances, winning gold at the 2010 Vancouver Games and silver in 2014. Meanwhile, American figure skater Fleming claimed the only gold medal for the states at the 1968 Grenoble Games.

The biathlon has also witnessed mind-blowing female talent with Uschi Disl of Germany, who earned six Olympic medals and made a lasting impact in the sport with her exceptional speed and precision. Given the demanding nature of the sport, which pushes athletes to their limits in endurance and mental focus, her back-to-back successes are truly impressive.

These legendary athletes have not only excelled in their respective disciplines but have also broken barriers for women in a historically male-dominated field, inspiring countless girls across the globe.
