While I am more of a movie fanatic, I have always had a love for sitcoms. Back home, watching TV shows together is a shared experience, and I have grown up watching various shows and enjoying them with my family. Whether I like to admit it or not, my personality is basically an amalgamation of every single TV/ movie character that I have loved, because well, life imitates art.

The TV show that has probably influenced me the most would be ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ (B99), a popular TV show set in Brooklyn, New York, and outlines the stories of various cops of the 99th Precinct of the NYPD.

While the article does ask how a singular TV show character has influenced me, I would like to tip my hat to the writers of the show, because every single character has influenced me and my views in some way. I try my best to be like the funny, annoying and lovable Jake Peralta, but also find myself relating to the nerdy, competitive and FOMOW-ing Amy Santiago. I am just as emotional and affected by food as Charles Boyle, and have a lifelong adoration of love and yogurt like Terry Jeffords.

Captain Raymond Holt makes me want to strive to hold myself to a higher standard and work hard, while also being okay with being petty at times. Micheal Hitchcock and Norm Scully helped me embrace my lazy side that loves to snack and nap, and Rosa Diaz made me understand that a person can hold multitudes, and inspired my love of knives (I’m not a psychopath, it’s a legitimate hobby).

Watching Gina Linetti on screen just made me realise that there can only be one Gina because I could never be that cool.

Every single character in that show has somehow influenced a part of my personality, and I adore it. It has been my comfort show for the longest time, and no matter how many times I rewatch it, I will love it just the same. Every single character impacted me so much that I find myself imitating their mannerisms sometimes, as geeky as that sounds!

Whether it is trying to make puns constantly, or understanding that washing a partner’s hair is, in fact, the most intimate thing you can do for them, B99 has shaped my worldview as a whole, and I wouldn't change it for the world.

All the characters are flawed, they all stumble and cross obstacles, and learn from them constantly, in the most hilarious way possible. The show showed me that no matter what happens, finding something funny and finding a group of people to enjoy it with, makes life worth living. And for that reason, I am completely content being influenced by a sitcom and it is a huge part of who I am!
