The end of March means only one thing for Dance Club - the annual dance show. This year’s theme is Flix 'n Kicks - showcasing all things film though a variety of dance styles. With over 250 dancers partaking in the show at Northern Stage, Flix 'n Kicks is set to be Newcastle University's dance highlight of the year.

Teachers and Dancers have been working hard every week since the start of this semester to learn, place, and polish routines before they hit the stage. Dance Club’s impressive membership means there are several big group-numbers, bound to dazzle audiences with complex formations, cannon techniques, and on-theme costumes.

For Dance Club’s President, Emily Doyle, this is the third and final show with the club.

“This year feels totally different because I’ve been involved in every aspect of the show as president. It’s a lot of responsibility, but it’s also been so rewarding to see everything come together from behind the scenes. Seeing how much work goes into making this show happen has given me a whole new appreciation for it!”

Emily teaches Intermediate Contemporary and has co-choreographed a routine to “Writing’s on the Wall” from Spectre.

“We wanted something that felt slick, stylish, and intense - basically, everything that makes James Bond so iconic! The music is so dramatic, and it gives us the chance to play with sharp, powerful movement and a bit of storytelling too. It’s such a fun challenge for the dancers, and it’s going to look incredible on stage!”

Everyone in the club is encouraged to take part, so the event is a perfect opportunity to come together to wrap up the academic year and showcase the skills learned in weekly classes. Dance Club competition teams have also been busy competing across the country, so these award-winning routines will of course be performed in the show.

This year’s theme is particularly exciting: from the soaring scores of How to Train Your Dragon to the musical mayhem of High School Musical, there has been no shortage of iconic song choices for the film-themed routines. Emily predicts High School Musical to be a “crowd favourite”, stating “it’s full of energy, fun, and nostalgia, making it such an exciting moment in the show”.

More of an action film fan? Fear not, for Advanced Tap’s competition routine “Tap Gun” routine brings you thrill, precision, and even a few surprises along the way.

“It’s so fast-paced and exciting,” Emily says, “and it recently won Best Choreography at one of our competitions, which is such an amazing achievement.”

“I’ve also had the pleasure of watching Intermediate Jazz rehearse every week, and it’s been incredible to see their Moulin Rouge-themed piece come together. The choreography, the music, and the energy are all so dramatic and theatrical, it’s going to be absolutely stunning on stage!”

“If you love movies, dance, or just a great night out, you won’t regret it. The energy from the dancers is unreal, and every routine brings something different, so there’s never a dull moment. Plus, it’s a chance to support so many talented students and a club that means so much for so many people - so grab your tickets and enjoy an unforgettable night of dance!”
