The first series aired back in 2020 and has continued to increase in viewership with every new season. The fourth and newest series began airing weekly in January, with over 800,000 people tuning into the first episode in the US. Here’s a few reasons why you should join the many who are tapped into television’s buzziest show:
The Characters
but all their stories represent the messiness of post-graduate life and how to navigate the workplace
The majority of the main characters are graduates entering the workforce for the first time. Harper Stern, Yasmin Kara-Hanani, Robert Spearing and Gus Sackey all come from a variety of different backgrounds when it comes to class, race and sexuality – but all their stories represent the messiness of post-graduate life and how to navigate the workplace as a newcomer. It might not be comforting viewing, but it can be very relatable at times.
The Themes
The show is set in London, so each season tackles a major social issue that affects the United Kingdom, especially the stock market. The first series mainly focusses on the graduates adjusting to their roles, but the second series looks at the effects of COVID-19, the third covers greenwashing and the fourth delves into the rise of fascism coupled with the 2024 election victory of the Labour Government. It’s incredibly timely television that is becoming exceedingly rare in the age of streaming.
The Chaos
I understand that a show about a bunch of graduates working in a bank doesn’t sound all that exciting. Industry is much more than that. It grabs you from the very first episode, taking you on a rollercoaster journey through flexible morals, depraved behaviour and cutting one-liners. I wouldn’t recommend watching it with your parents, but you should absolutely take the ride yourself. You will not regret it.
Industry series four is airing at 10:40PM on Mondays on BBC One and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
