Its that time of year again, when easter eggs fill our stomachs and blue skies save us from seasonal depression, and now is the time to enjoy hot cross buns. Although historically they were always made for Christian symbolism, reflecting the crucifixion of Jesus, these sweet buns have made it away from just this tradition and become a commercial product adored worldwide. Personally, as someone not the biggest fan of the traditional current and spice infused bun, I was most excited when I heard about the releases of various other flavours in numerous different shops.

Now M&S, as usual, do it best with a choice of seven flavours. From the traditional rich and fruity bun to a tiramisu inspired bun or the filled chocolate heaven of the red velvet selection. Whether you like them hot and buttered like I do with the extremely cheesy bun, or melted with oozing chocolate by placing the extremely chocolatey option in the air fryer, the next important step is what to pair these delicious treats with. Online creators such as Grackle, who is known for her food tasting videos, have begun to investigate how to appropriately match the buns to a beverage.

...so despite the pair being well suited, the drink is just a companion and must not take the spotlight away from the main event.

Remember the bun is the star of the show, so despite the pair being well suited, the drink is just a companion and must not take the spotlight away from the main event. First off, for the traditional hot crossed bun, generously spread butter on once toasted and match with a cup of tea, milkiness to your own preference of course, but please use Yorkshire teabags. This traditional brew would also match nicely with the cheesy scones, however for the chocolaty selection of Red Velvet or Extremely Chocolatey I would recommend a green tea for a more relaxing taste to counter the sweetness of the buns, but if you do have a seriously sweet tooth, the bitterness of a mocha would match very well too. For coffee lovers, the tiramisu could be paired with any coffee or for a slight twist, pair with a chamomile tea for the flavours as well as the boosting impacts it has for your immune system. Finally, the Granny Smith Apple sweet bun would find a fit companion in a chai tea, aiding digestion whilst pairing the spices embedded with this fruity roll, this would be a match made in hot cross heaven.
