The Disney studio has produced 'okay' movies for several years, with spin off and sequels attracting mixed reviews. But this original new film brings something more to the table for our inner child.

Hoppers, directed by Daniel Chong, the creator of We Bare Bears, made us fall in love with more animals in this science fiction comedy. The story goes like this, Mabel a young environmental activist, subject to anger issues, gives herself the mission of saving the natural lake, which the animals have deserted from the extensions of the city of Beaverton. For that she will have to battle the popular mayor of the city, Jerry, and will get the help of the secret advanced technologies of Dr. Samantha.

...an important subject which can be transposed to reality.

The story brings something special with its dynamic and structure, and most of all it’s on an important subject which can be transposed to reality. It touches on themes such as nature treatment, political management of the world, technology improvement and power, plus technology and AI replacing our world. There are comedic and loveable, goofy characters; the beavers are cute, King George makes us want to be best friends with him, and Jerry is charismatic. The story is entertaining, engaging, funny; really everything you want from an excellent animated kids film.

I haven't felt that much joy in front of a Pixar movie since covid, and it might be a while before we see that again. Pixar and Disney's astronomical budget made the studio specialise in franchises that bring in a lot of money. So good that the recipe for the best Pixar films was lost along the way. In June 2025, Elio received good reviews but far from the standard of ten years ago. Some would argue that this is due to the story being too flat and the theme not exploited enough. On the opposite side in spring 2025, the Pixar TV Show Win Or Loss was at the head of several good reviews. Possibly because its episodic format allowed more themes to be exploited and in a better way.

Thus, here is another proof that in cinema what matters the most is a meaningful story. Even if it is not meant to be understood easily, even more in a kid movie, it brings structure and that true feeling of wonder we have left in our childhood. This is all the more true when it comes to the survival of planet earth and humanity's treatment of the environment. It was nice to feel the Pixar magic once again and may we all never forget that joy.
