And that’s not even the best bit: you can get involved too.
Like the Courier and NSR, NUTV is run by students, for students. So many hardworking volunteers give up their time to make sure our coverage is the best it can be, and there are multiple ways to get involved, both behind the camera and in front. Every time volunteering at NUTV can be different: you can be operating a camera during the heat and sweat of Fight Night, interviewing candidates for the student elections, or out on sunny sports fields getting as much coverage of Varsity as you can.
Previous NUTV volunteers Carly and Logan were both regulars at several Fight Nights. Logan said that presenting and commentating was a key part of his third year, saying, “I got to improvise my presenting skills and camera presence, and I also got a front row seat to some really cool fights! My co-presenters and the crew behind the camera were all lovely and we had such a fun time.”
Carly spoke highly of NUTV as a whole, saying “whether you love being in front of a camera or can’t imagine anything worse, there are events throughout the year that you should definitely consider getting involved in. While I was personally involved in presenting at Fight Night, there were so many opportunities to get involved as a runner, camera operator, commentator, and even executive positions.”
...we’re looking for a new Station Manager!
Sounds good, doesn’t it? The perfect chance to get fantastic experience at interviewing, presenting, filming and, to top it off, you get to join our fantastic student media community. But if you’re still not convinced, there’s also a chance for you to lead NUTV, as we’re looking for a new Station Manager! And if you don’t know what that is, I’ll let last year’s Station Manager, Grace Laidler, explain:
“Hello! I’m Grace and I was the station manager of NUTV last year. It was a daunting but very rewarding job, where I got to lead livestreams of many on-campus events.
I learnt a mixture of soft and hard skills. I learnt how to operate cameras, vision mix on the MEG system and how to broadcast live on YouTube. I learnt how to lead a production team in a time-pressure environment and how to remain calm when problems arrived. All of these skills were vital when securing a job in the journalism industry.
My proudest moment was our live stream of the Newcastle vs Northumbria Varsity - something which had never been done before on the channel. If you want to gain live broadcast experience, whether in front or behind the camera, then NUTV is the place for you!”
We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Come and join the fun!
