In my opinion, hostels are the best budget option for a place to stay when travelling. I love a hostel! They offer the unique experience of meeting a myriad of people from all over the world, and an all round amazing atmosphere, at an affordable price. Nevertheless, while wrapped up in all this excitement, you must remember to follow hostel etiquette…

When in REM:

As expected, the pillar of hostels is a good night’s sleep. One of the most awkward situations is when you’re soft launching to your friend that you want to turn the big light off, but you’re unsure of whether other people in the dorm would agree. Yet, someone must be the one to do it, so in my opinion, if it’s late, and everyone in is in bed, then I would go ahead and turn it off.

it's time to get your headphones on!

I’m sure it goes without saying, but once this light is turned off and curtains are drawn, the big light should remain off for the night. Also, this is a gentle reminder that your phone screen and torch are a lot brighter than you think they are! Imagine you are at the cinema; keep conversations to a low volume where possible too. It’s time to get your headphones on!

Bathroom Basics:

Showering in a hostel is less of a pampering session and more of a function for fungi, so suit up with your flip flops, they are a must! Have you ever been thinking about having a shower, and right before you jump in, someone waltzes in and your day is off to an awful start? Due to the limited shower availability in a dorm, be as quick as you can showering.

I appreciate the people who have mastered the twelve-step-shower-routine, but you have all the time for this when you’re in the comfort of your own home.

The Anonymous Buffet:

When travelling on a budget, the kitchen quickly becomes something similar to Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares. It is also important to respect the “Free Shelf” that exists in hostel kitchens.

While interrailing, my friend and I donated some pasta and the odd unfinished pasta sauce. Remember, leave what you don’t use for others, and only take what you need. Never forget to wash up, properly!

These unwritten rules ensure hostels stay a fun, exciting, and enjoyable place for everyone! Happy hostelling!
