Despite an extremely early start on Friday and Storm Eunice’s lovely presence, NUAXC made it to Sheffield EIS arena for the BUCS 2022 indoor athletics.

With a buzzing atmosphere and lots of excitement, the events began, and Newcastle established early on that we would be the loudest supporting uni.

Starting the team off strong in the field events were Jake and Nathan competing in the shot put. Both athletes showed their skills and threw great distances with Jake achieving a new PB of 8.87m. At the same time the excitement of the 60m began and after all the efforts from training, our 60m athletes definitely delivered, making NUAXC proud. First up was Jake who did great, even with the stress of having a timing clash with shot put. Then the women’s 60m followed with Jagoda and Alicia smashing their races, both achieving PBs 8.79 (Alicia) and 8.49 (Jagoda).

After a successful day one, everyone was eager to start Saturday’s events. The first track race of the day was the 1500m, a hard race, and our only cross-country representative Ed did amazingly well. Next up was the 400m heats, with JC, Naomi and athletics captain Asha, running strong races. An extra special mention to Asha, who cruised her way over the finish line, coming first in her heat and making it into the semi-finals.

After all the excitement and cheering from the 400m, Nathan took to the high jump and achieved an impressive height of 1.85m. Then came the most anticipated event of the weekend - the mascot race - and it certainly was exciting to watch! James represented our famous lion costume, and most definitely ran a PB, even by completing the 200m distance in lane! Other mascots weren’t as dedicated as Newcastle, being dressed in onesies giving them a clear advantage over NUAXC, meaning we, unfortunately, didn’t make the final.

The last event of the day was the men’s 4x200m. Nathan started strong on the first leg, followed by Ed, then Jake maintained the speedy pace and finishing was JC who powered over the finish line. The famous NUAXC slogan ‘start fast, maintain the pace, sprint finish’ clearly worked, as the boys secured second place in their heat. Unfortunately, our women’s relay team had to withdraw from racing due to injury, however, we were sure they would have performed equally as brilliant as the boys!

With one final day of competition remaining and athletes feeling tired from the previous days excitement, it didn’t stop the team's high spirit and moral.

First on the track was the 200m with Emma running a solid race. Due to covid the boys were unable to represent in this distance. Next up was Sunday’s star of the show, Asha’s 400m semi-final and with a final at stake, the pressure was on, but Asha maintained calm and performed amazingly, achieving a new indoor PB of 56.40 and very nearly an outdoor PB. She finished second in her heat and secured her place in the final. Asha did NUAXC proud in the finals and it is safe to say there were quite a few sore throats from all the supporters after!! Finally, non-competing athletes, Aidan and athletics captain Melissa, did a fabulous job at motivating everybody throughout the weekend and also shoutout to JC and Melissa for driving the team, especially in such horrific road conditions.

Overall, NUAXC had a fabulous weekend down in Sheffield, and everyone who competed should be proud of their performances - roll on BUCS outdoors!
