Firstly, what society/club event are you going to? Are they themed? Themes are pretty easy to follow, they can be red carpet, masquerade, etc. But the reason I also think of who I’m going with is for the pictures and things I’ll be doing. I'm with the Pole and Aerial Club, so I’m thinking a short dress for mobility (Soho pole part 2?), and to match the more casual venue and vibe.
This moves onto my second question: are you going out afterward? If there is a large chance you’ll be hitting the clubs, wear your comfiest shoes, or consider bringing them with you. If bringing a pair of sneakers or sandals isn’t going to be an option, make them part of your look! And for those wearing dresses, do remember if you’re changing shoes to mind the length of your hem. There’s nothing worse than realising that your dress is now too long and you will be dragging that across a club floor. (Emergency tip: bunch it up with a hair tie, no one will be looking at the train of your dress anyway!)
Third, what sort of layer are you bringing? (Except for the people who run warm, I’m jealous) Summertime means that the weather is a little kinder than six months ago, but the unpredictability of rain and venue air-conditioning can make this tricky. I’ve been a big fan of bringing a plain scarf or shawl as it can be nicer looking than a jacket, but also easier to carry around.
Lastly, consider matching your date or friends. Find some sort of colour that links all of you, or a type of accessory. For example, I matched a silver sequin gown to my boyfriend’s grey shirt, and you can play around with different combos like that. See if you can find a cheap tie or scarf that you can turn into a pocket square for some fun!
