Sheffield United manager, Chris Wilder was spotted in Sheffield pub following the teams win in the Sheffield Derby. This move has prompted much activity on social media, particularly in the form of Sean Dyche-laden tweets claiming that football is ‘back’.
We’re all familiar with these sorts of messages by now. The Sean Dyche photo, the ‘woke nonsense’ quote, the old Barclay’s Premier League badge, are all familiar sights to those caught on the wrong side of ‘football twitter’.
Wednesday and United engaged in what can best be described as a cagey affair in the Steel City Derby, making both the game and the fallout feel straight out of the 1980s.
The match made clear the improvements both teams have made. Wilder’s United lost 8-0 at home last season against Newcastle United, with the match having eight different goal scorers. This was part of a season where the side broke the record for most goals conceded in a single Premier League season as their porous defence let in 104 goals. However, they have only conceded seven so far this season.
Wednesday too looked to have bettered themselves, after a 6-2 loss to Watford the week before. Unlike last season, the Owls have been able to pick up points fairly regularly, with boss, Danny Röhl, adopting a pragmatic approach. While clearly not the finished article yet, Wednesday look to be a better outfit than last season, as the summer saw Röhl receive backing in the form of incoming players after saving the side from what appeared to be certain relegation.
