There’s nothing better than a beautiful spring day. The sun is out, the birds are chirping, the leaves are green again, and you can finally put that puffer away. But then, the heavens open or the sun goes behind a cloud and you’re left a soaking, shivering mess. So what can you do? Throw on a lightweight jacket of course!

The first jacket worth mentioning is the raincoat. Now I know that these jackets are designed primarily for functionality, but you don’t have to be halfway up a mountain to wear one. If you haven’t noticed, “gorpcore”, the trend in which outdoor clothing is being worn as streetwear, has blown up recently. There has never been a better time to wear a jacket that will not only keep you bone dry, but also show that you have your finger on the pulse in the fashion world.

Next on the list is sort of a compromise between your winter puffer and your hopes for a warmer spring day; that’s right, it’s the gilet. These sleeveless tops allow you to keep warm, but not too warm. They go brilliantly with a hoodie, but can also pair beautifully with a shirt or smart cardigan if you’re trying to channel that aristocratic vibe.

A vintage windbreaker can add the colour pop you need for your bright spring wardrobe. These lightweight, but functional, coats add a real flair to your outfits and are a perfect way to show off your personality. Found all over the place in charity shops, vintage stores and online second hand market places, adding a windbreaker to your jacket collection has never been easier.

Not in the market for a waterproof, but still wanting a bit more heat? Time to turn to denim (or canvas) jackets. These stylish pieces can bring a confused outfit together. Often best with signs of a bit of wear or distress, these stylish tops offer a rugged but distinguished look. Carhartt and Dickies have a great range, but you don’t have to go branded to find the one for you.

Finally, for the sophisticated of you, there’s the blazer. Smart, and warm, this half of a suit can level up your fit. Not just meant for the business meetings, these garments can be worn with jeans or again a hoodie underneath to keep things casual.

So hopefully, with these five examples, I have opened your eyes to the boundless possibilities of spring jackets. Fear those pesky showers and frosty shadows no more!
