Does fashion truly matter when dating?

What does your style say about you to a potential partner? Is there such thing as a fashion red flag?

I would like to say that I am an open-minded person who does not judge a book by its cover, but that would ultimately be a lie. I think everyone (as much as they may refuse to admit it) forms an initial judgement of someone based on how they look. In my opinion, fashion is one of the most important components of making a first impression - clothes are such a brilliant way of self-expression.  Everybody knows that feeling of putting their favourite pair of jeans on and feeling great about themselves.

With that in mind, when putting yourself out there on the dating scene, deciding what to wear can be such a challenge. You want to look like you’ve just thrown something on effortlessly and yet your bedroom floor tells a different story. My best piece of advice would be to wear what you love. Of course, some people may not like your fashion sense but that’s ok. If your date loves what you’re wearing, then that’s a great sign. Equally, if you’re not a fan of their shirt then you can decide if it is something that you want to look past or not.

For me, it’s all about confidence. If you wear what you love with confidence, then people will respond positively. Even if they don’t like your outfit, they may be very interested in you because of the way you wear it. Additionally, keep an open mind. I will always remember my boyfriend buying a new pair of shoes and me absolutely hating them. Needless to say, a few months later, I now own the same pair of shoes. That’s the fun of it. You can judge all you like but at some point, you might be proved wrong.
