Now that study season is in full swing, we find ourselves seeking solace in coffee shops for a good brew and a sweet treat to tackle assignments. Spread over five North East locations, you’ll never be far from their speciality coffee and artisan doughnuts.  I visited their Dean Street location to check out what their seasonal menu has to offer.

Fresh, small-batch and made in-house, Deep North are renowned for their inventive doughnut flavours; however, they have outdone themselves with this year’s autumnal specials. Introducing four unique flavours, starting strong with the ‘Dirty Chai’ – a buttery glazed doughnut with a generous topping of cinnamon- spicy, nutty and warming just like the drink; this one earns first place for me.

To the readers with a sweet tooth, you must try the ‘Sticky Toffee Pudding.’ All of the things we love about the dessert in dough form. Sugary, filled to the brim with rich toffee crème and nostalgia: a comforting classic, which will be sorely missed next menu makeover.

Next on the lineup, this month's ‘Seasonal Jam,’ which happens to be a rustic, ‘Apple and Plum,’ – very on theme! A perfect combination of earthy and sweet. I suppose that’s two of your five a day as well? This one has received high remarks on socials, and I can see why!

Finally, Deep North’s creative take on a crowd-pleaser. ‘Pumpkin Spiced Custard.’ The trendy autumn staple reimagined into something original and downright delicious. And, you can pair it with ‘Pumpkin Spiced everything,’ as Deep North announced on their Instagram that all hot drinks can be enjoyed with the syrup this season, as ‘that’s what the people want, right?’ (Yes, we do!)

The drinks don’t just stop at the PSL; several carefully curated beverages have also been added to the menu. The Salted Maple Pecan Latte, a shot of espresso from fresh, A.R.T. allpresso beans, steamed milk and salted pecan crumb; A Maple cinnamon Hojicha (Japanese roasted tea); or for those looking for a cool down, the Apple Pie iced tea, a black tea combined with an in-house made syrup.

In short, Deep North’s seasonal menu has something we all crave this autumn. So, next time you find yourself retreating to a coffee shop to power through your coursework, give this one a try.
