As the table currently stands, the first team is clear at the top of the Northern 2B league with 15 points. The second team sits second in the Northern 4B league with 12 points, just three points and one game in hand behind the top of the table Leeds.
Overall, the performances from the girls have been very impressive so far. Both teams have scored a combined total of 56 goals across both league and cup, averaging just over 4 goals a game. The top scorers from both teams are Amelia Eastham for the firsts and Dana Sumait for the seconds.
As well as the BUCS Football league, NUWFC is also participating in the BUCS futsal league and representing Newcastle East End Football Club as their women’s team on a Sunday. In Futsal, the girls have won both of their two games, with the highlight being an impressive 24-1 win over Liverpool John Moores. In the Sunday league for NEEFC, the girls have a 100% win record so far despite a spell of recently cancelled games due to the weather. We are looking forward to the futsal round-robin tournaments in the new year and continuing a winning streak in the Sunday league.
One aspect of the current season we have been so impressed with is how well all of the girls have gelled together. We unfortunately had a lot of players graduate at the end of last season, and so around half of our current squad are new to NUWFC. It’s been fantastic to see how well all of the girls have integrated into the team and become intrinsic parts of the lineups on Wednesdays. I think the results and statistics speak for themselves on the strength of the team spirit at NUWFC this season.
While the football is important, I would also like to mention the other events and fundraising we have been doing at NUWFC. Most recently, alongside the men’s football team, we ran a food bank collection for The Trussel Trust which was very successful. We’ve also had some great social events organised by our social secretaries Amelia and Megan, most notably our Christmas meal at City Tavern.
Overall, the first half of the season has been a great success for NUWFC, both in a footballing sense and otherwise. I would like to say a big thank you all of our players and coaches for their commitment and dedication to the club. We are looking forward to what the new year has to bring for NUWFC, which could hopefully be a promotion or two.
