Valentine’s Day is, without a doubt, the marmite of all dates on the calendar. I am certain that a significant number of people may have been hoping that alongside bars, pubs, gyms, cinemas and the ability to see many of our loved ones, Valentine’s Day was out of the question this year. But, no matter how you feel about it, it’s approaching us at lightning speed.

However, whilst the 14th February is a celebration marked by doting couples and tacky gifts (yeah, I’m looking at you, giant teddy bear…) it could perhaps also be a day that more of us can get on board with; the day where we celebrate platonic love and friendship or, if we want a better term… PALentines Day! Whether you’re lucky enough to be cooped up inside with your friends, or find yourself miles apart, here are a few Covid-safe ideas for how you can make your PALentines Day enjoyable and special this year!

Zoom Quiz

If you haven’t already had it up to your eyeballs with Zoom classes and tutorials, the classic Zoom quiz is a great way to spend some time with your pals. Perhaps create personalised rounds, such as ‘who’s nose is this?’ or, ‘who is most likely to kiss a stranger on a night out?’ (Please note: this is not virus friendly!) Either way, a quiz is a great way have a laugh and maybe a beverage or two!

Bottomless Brunch or Afternoon Tea

Gone are the days of going to a bar for a boozy bottomless brunch and, unfortunately, we aren’t too sure when we can plan to go again but, if you’re lucky enough to be living with your friends, why not host your own! All you need is a platter of your fave snacks and a few bottles of bubbly and Bob’s your uncle. You could even get dressed up to make it even more realistic (and to snap some pics!)

Cook-Along

This one is certainly on my to-do list for PALentines day! You could all cook up your go-to uni meal, or bake something tasty on Facetime to your friends and see who’s botched it up the most at the end. This is certainly a good way to reminisce on the good times in a (slightly grubby) uni kitchen - with a treat at the end! You could even make a slightly classier meal because, let’s face it, we haven’t had to splash out on taxi money since the bars have closed; we are allowed to treat ourselves to something a little bit fancier than a Tesco £3 meal deal!

Netflix Party

Are you missing film night with your besties? Even that one particular individual who keeps interrupting to ask what’s going on? (You know who you are.) Well, you no longer need to worry, because Netflix has us covered. The browser extension, 'Teleparty', (formerly known as Netflix Party), allows synchronised video playback on services including Netflix and Disney+, so you can watch a film with your friends in real time! There’s also a chat section, so you can comment on the film; same fun, with fewer annoying interruptions!

Regardless if you have a Valentine or not, there's no excuse to miss out on PALentine's Day celebrations. No, not even face masks and social distancing can stop us from spreading the love in 2021.
