Each year the club gets an influx of new players joining and these freshers help make this club a success. Ranging from the first team to the sixth team, players join every team and this year's ability has increased the talent greatly. This can be seen by how many freshers have scored during their debut performances this week as out of eight games, only two teams lost - four wins, two draws, two loses.
As the Ladies 1’s push for National League their winning streak continued from their first British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) game, as they travelled away to Morpeth beating their ladies 1’s 4-0. Goals came from Captain Nella Walters, Jess Moricca, Brogan Tennant and Zoe Carter.
Meanwhile, the Ladies 2’s found themselves home this week after travelling away to Leeds last week. In the prime-time slot of a 3pm pushback they sure did deliver a prime performance, winning 3-0 against Sheffield Hallam 2’s. Goals were scored by Maddie Howlett, Lucy Bell and Leah Goodley.
Then the Ladies 3’s found themselves playing against close rivals Durham University's 5th team and what a close game it was. The final score was 2-2, but Newcastle scored three of those goals - with a very unlucky own goal from defender Annabella Deane, which put Durham ahead in the first 15 minutes. However, Newcastle turned it around with Freshers Elena Swanton and Josie Rule scoring their debut goals for the university. Another shout out to fresher Emmy Gittins who was Player of the Match this week.
Ladies 4’s faced, the Ladies 3’s previous opponent, Alnwick 1’s which unfortunately saw a 3-0 loss but the score line didn’t represent the even game and the fight our girls put up.
The Ladies 5’s saw themselves with consecutive successes this weekend winning both their games. On Saturday they beat Whitley Bay and Tynemouth 3’s 2-1 with goals coming from fresher Karis Chambers, in her debit game for the club, and the other was an own goal from the opposition. Sunday saw the goals continue as they won 4-1.
Last but not least, the Ladies 6’s lost 4-1 against Mopeth 2’s. The goal came from another debut performance from Hannah Brace. Sunday saw the 6’s come back fighting 3-3 draw against Hartlepool & Billingham 1’s.
This week saw the start of the season for most of the club and for many freshers, it was their very first game for Newcastle University, with some even gracing the score sheets. Their addition to the club is important and has a great impact on every team... for the better.
