How many times have you gone out shopping, only to buy several things you really don’t need that end up rotting at the back of your fridge? Maybe it sounded really nice at the time, but now it’s 7pm on a Tuesday and you just want to cook something you’re familiar with, and that recipe you saw on TikTok sounds too time-consuming. Before you know it, the food you’ve bought in a moment of inspiration is past its sell-by date and it's tossed into your bin. It’s a waste of money and a waste of food, but there are ways to tackle it.
  1. Plan your meals

Okay, you don’t have to be Gordon Ramsay and plan incredibly detailed meals. But just knowing a week in advance what you’re planning on cooking can help you crack down on what you’re going to buy before you get into the shop. That way, as tempting as the reduced section looks, you’ll know that you won’t have time that week to eat it.

  1. Check the use-by date

This one sounds obvious, but it’s so easy to not realise that something is going out of date until it’s mouldy and there’s no saving it. In order to avoid that happening, try planning meals that use those foods early in the week to save yourself from disappointment and having to throw unnecessary foods out.

  1. Share your food with housemates

If you have a few peppers that are just sitting there, and one of your housemates is complaining that they never remember to buy vegetables, why not give them one? It helps the environment massively, and the next time you’ve forgotten to buy something crucial for your next meal your housemate might be able to help you out in return. Even better, cook meals together! It’ll cost you less and might help you to expand your food horizons too.

Not to mention that the less you spend on food, the more you can spend on that Starbucks drink or the odd takeaway too. It’s a win-win situation, and keeps less food from being tossed out that could’ve been given to someone else. By staying aware of what we buy and consume, we can all do our bit to help out the environment. Besides, who wants to say they spent their student loan on food they never even ate?
