The collaboration was announced in March 2023 and the collection will launched in May. H&M organised an event in April in New York with 800 attendees, many of whom were spotted wearing pieces from the Mugler x H&M collection. The event showcased a full catwalk show and performances by artists such as Shygirl, Amaarae, and Eartheater.
The collection will be available in UK stores from the 11th of May and was created with the guidance of Mugler’s creative director Casey Cadwallader, According to H&M, the collection will encompass the unique and vibrant spirit of the brand.
H&M is a widely known commercial fashion brand which has had notable collaborations with high fashion brands, dating back to as early as 2004. Some of the unforgettable collections include collaborations with Karl Lagerfeld, Versace, Balmain and Stella McCartney, with most recent collaboration being H&M x Simone Roche in March of 2021. Each of these collaborations presented designs and signature looks from high fashion legends and incorporated that into H&M’s aesthetic and audience. This move gave space for commercial fashion and high fashion to be on the same playing ground.
The lookbook for the collection is available on the H&M website and will be available to shop in stores from the 11th of May. The collection involves sleek black designs that are representative of Mugler’s style, including pieces inspired by Mugler’s signature catsuits, LBDs, accessories, and belts with the signature Mugler ‘M’. The collection radiates an idea of elegance with chic and the concept encapsulates the Mugler essence, whilst also taking into consideration the trendiness and practicality that H&M offers to its audience.
Mugler has created its mark in the fashion world in several ways. We’ve witnessed Mugler in public with celebrities such as Madonna, Kim Kardashian, Dua Lipa, and Cardi B wearing pieces by Mugler. The H&M x Mugler collection sees the effect of these iconic pieces and reflects that energy onto their collection, as it includes pieces that are very similar to Mugler designs worn by Megan Fox at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards and the 1991 Thierry Mugler Vampire dress, which was worn by Alexa Demie for Euphoria season two.
With Mugler coming into the commercial markets, this gives space for high fashion to be more accessible. H&M’s collaborations have always presented a case of accessibility for all. Whilst working with names that are high up in the fashion world, this opens fashion up to a larger set of individuals. High fashion is not all that accessible due to its restricted availability, high price, and the constraints of proximity. Movements such as H&M x Mugler allow everyday folks to have their hand at iconic pieces in fashion.
As fashion becomes more accessible to the masses it allows for the growth of creativity and more perspectives to be heard in the world of couture. Accessibility paves the way for innovation and artistry.
