A white Christmas is a romantic ideal that we have all seen in movies such as The Holiday and Home Alone, but there is no guarantee here in England. Although climate change is of course putting the likelihood of a white Christmas in danger worldwide, there is a far bigger chance of getting one if you hit the slopes in France, Italy, Austria or even Andorra (one of my personal favourite skiing destinations in Europe). Or if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, Canada, Colorado or the White Mountains near Boston (a family favourite) all have fantastic slopes and, as with everything over the Atlantic, Christmas is bigger and arguably better. Nothing can beat a Christmas Day ski to build a good appetite for your Christmas dinner of choice.
However, the cold weather and snowy fantasy aren’t the only things that make Christmas feel special and festive. Family, fun and relaxation are key to the day as well and nothing says relax like a day on the beach. To find winter sun, you will undoubtedly have to travel a bit further, and to avoid the Christmas travel rush I would advise making the trip a little longer. The Caribbean is a great choice for a festive and fun holiday as each island has their traditions and has its own incredible selection of food to switch up the turkey for curry goat. The Maldives are also a great choice for a luxurious Christmas day, a friend said they had traditional Maldivian bands playing on the beach as they were treated to a BBQ that the whole island enjoyed. There is no better way to spend Christmas than in shorts and a bikini, snorkelling with tropical fish and lemon sharks. Personally, I think I would love a hot Christmas, to escape the cold weather and bring in the new year with a fresh tan.
