The appropriateness of this slouchy look was formerly reserved for men but has been reclaimed for women in lockdown looking to get in on a piece of their comfort.
Loungewear, once seen as slouchy and criticised when worn by women as them ‘not making enough effort’, is now the most sought-after look of 2021. No longer do women have to conform to, quite frankly unrealistic, societal standards of feminine, form-fitting clothing or a pristine appearance due to the changes of society's structure by lockdown. As many became removed from their normal routines, jeans were ditched in favour of joggers and gym leggings- the staples of a girl seeking comfort. Many women and young girls, like myself, have learned to feel empowered and glamorous in a baggy t-shirt despite years of society telling us otherwise.
The ‘stay home’ rhetoric has permeated the media and popular brands that have capitalised on the lockdown by introducing fashionable loungewear that girls want to wear both at home, and on their Instagram feed. By embracing a slouchy outfit and ditching the need for uncomfortable tight jeans and tops, the lockdown female is liberated and has redefined what it means to be dressed.
Loungewear has been repurposed to not just provide comfort, but to make women feel beautiful in a period where getting dressed feels futile. On a day when getting out of your pyjamas feels like a mammoth task, putting on your favourite, coordinated loungewear suit can make you feel like you have your whole life in order. Stylish loungewear has saved many women from feeling lost in this pandemic by enabling them to express themselves through fashion, despite the runway of their lives being closed. The girl who once wore dresses and heels now feels glamorous in joggers and trainers- and that’s okay.
Whether you’re making pasta in the kitchen at 10pm in a sequin dress, or taking your online university classes in your oldest sweatshirt, empowerment in lockdown comes from learning to love both versions of yourself: post and pre Covid-19.
