Incredible women: what makes my mother inspiring?

In the first instalment of our articles commemorating International women's day, Patrick Young explains why his mother is a woman who inspires him.

Not to sound super sappy, and babyish but I am inspired by my mum, on a daily basis. When I think of an inspirational woman, she is the first that comes to mind.

She started as a typist with barely any qualifications, and is now a successful practice manager of a law firm. How could I not be inspired by that? She has always been upfront about me trying to better myself, to leave behind my working-class upbringing, to try and give future generations, a better life-start than I had.

She has always supported me, no matter my choice in life; she has always been there. From raising me as a single mother, until she got married to my Step-Father, and her sending me off into the world of University, she has never been anything but encouraging of what I want to do in my life.

For much of my early years, she took on the role of both the paternal and maternal figure in my life. She worked for a pittance, in Southampton, 3 hours away from where we lived, just so she could support me and herself without relying on others to support her. We weren't well off, but she always made sure I was taken care of, even going without food, if there wasn't enough to go round.

How could I not be inspired by her self-sacrifice?

Now, she isn't perfect. Nobody is. But, I know that in every snarky remark, every probing question, is a tenderness that is trying to protect me from a world where I may be harmed.

My mum is an inspiration to me because when her dad left her mum, she stepped up to the plate, and tried her best to provide for her mum and brother. She may appear self-centred on the surface, but I know that she would move a mountain to ensure the people she really cares about are ok.

My mum inspires me to own up to my own issues. She knows we are not perfect, but she still tries her best each day to be the best spouse, and best parent, she can be. And, in the end, that's all that we can really be asked to do.

She may not be a celebrity, or a famous author, a politician, or inspirational speaker; but she has never, not for one second, ever told me that I can't be one of those

She may not be a celebrity, or a famous author, a politician, or inspirational speaker; but she has never, not for one second, ever told me that I can't be one of those, and in the end, her pride in me is what I am most thankful for. She inspires me, to make my future children as well cared for, as I was.
