I began to think about how my mum has taught me how to embrace myself and the way I am with no apology. I thought about how my sister has taught me that there is always someone that will be there for you and love you no matter what. How female musicians have spoken to me ever since I can remember and taught me that I don’t need validation, that it’s ok to be upset and emotional without feeling like I’m being hysterical, and that confidence is key to living your fullest life as a woman. The beautiful thing about all these influences is that they come from people who have influenced me by being themselves. They do not realise that just by being themselves, it has moulded me into who I am now.
Whilst female musicians such as SZA have helped me through some of the hardest times of my life, I cannot pick a single woman who has influenced my life for the better. I know that every woman I come into contact with, every woman that has shared a story with me and every woman that has given to the world has influenced me. The lyrics of SZA’s music have helped me greatly however I know I am not just listening to her words; she too has been moulded by the women around her and she is sharing that with me as the listener. Her words are also the words of many other women. This is how we as women are interconnected.
We are all connected and one woman’s actions create a ripple effect. This is why building each other up is so important, especially in a world where putting women against each other is what is wanted. Women have taught me how to build myself up and this is something I will be forever grateful for. Together we are strong, together we lift each other up and we transform each other’s life. We are all each other’s greatest influences.
