IRL Gaming: Newcastle's Best Game-Related Activities

If you love gaming, there is no reason to adhere to the stereotype of being holed up in your room. There are many spots in Newcastle where you can enjoy retro games with friends, and even those non-gamers, with a drink in hand in some cases… 

NQ64

This bar combines fantastic cocktails with retro games and neon decor for an electric atmosphere. Including fan favourites such as Pac-Man, Mario-Kart and Guitar Hero, there is such a range in the arcade, which spans two floors… You will never want to leave! Located on Pilgrim Street, it isn’t far from campus and even closer to the clubs and the metro, depending on where you want to spend the night. 

Tipsy Toad

One outside of the city centre, this micropub is found on Chillingham Road in Heaton; a great area of the city to explore. With craft ales and a quirky interior, they have a small arcade room towards the back of the pub with retro arcade games and a table football game for you and your mates. Unlike the other options on this list, all the games are completely free. "Alongside their cheap drinks and buskers nights, this is the place to game in Heaton", says Relationships Sub-editor, Jess. 

The CNTRL Pad

Located within The Gate, the CNTRL Pad has a huge selection of games to play going back over 30 years! They have a variety of consoles from all the PS games, Nintendo and Sega Dreamcast as well as modern games and setups like a virtual reality station. Of course, you can play alone, but the CNTRL Pad also hosts student nights, community-hosted events and even game-release events! 

YuME World

Also within The Gate, this is no average arcade. With a plethora of games to choose from including a Formula One driving experience and virtual reality immersion games. It's so simple to play, as you load a card up with money, which equates to tokens for each game. They also offer students various discounts and extras. 

TeamSport E-Karting

If arcades and bars aren't your thing, and you're looking for something that can give you that rush of adrenaline, then this karting spot on Scotswood Road is the place for you. Channel your inner Mario-Kart and get drifting. Although it's a bit far out from the city centre, it is still easily accessible via a simple bus journey from Eldon Square bus station. You can also effortlessly spend the entire day here thanks to a range of food options, and other activities such as VR experiences and e-darts!

Point Blank

If you want to take the concept of an FPS (first-person shooter) to the next level, then this virtual shooting range in the place for you. Point Blank includes many different booths where you can go with a number of friends, or as a fun, unique date idea! Located on Newgate Street, just outside of The Gate, you can test your accuracy against one another or work as a team and survive through as many levels as possible in the range of game modes available.
