Is Salah the best player in the world at the moment?

A discussion on whether Mohamed Salah is worth the hype or not.

Undoubtedly, Mohamed Salah is within contention of being the best footballer in the world at the moment, thanks to his scintillating form since the beginning of the 2021/22 season; having registered 15 goals and six assists in all competitions so far.

With the form of Liverpool looking reminiscent of their title winning side of 2019, the Egyptian is showing no signs of faltering, firmly establishing himself as one of the finest players to grace the pitch today. Previous critics of Salah, labelling him a "one tricky pony" and that he is shone a favourable light due to impressive stats. Rather Salah should be seen by his technical ability due to the reds talisman’s mesmerising close control and dribbling capped off with his clinical finishing.

Salah’s goals against Watford and Manchester City are almost Messi-esque, with his jinking runs drifting in between defenders with ample ease. Moreover, his travella assist to Sadio Mane against Watford on October 16 highlighted his evident ability to pick out a killer pass with such finesse, showcasing he is not just a goal scorer.

Clearly Salah is in esteemed company, with the likes of Karim Benzema, Robert Lewandowski as well as the omni-present Messi and Ronaldo performing at such heights, making this debate more complicated given the dazzling form of the aforementioned four forwards.

Particularly the Madrid veteran has been most notably in exceptional form this season, notching a stunning 13 goals and 9 assists in 14 games within all competitions. There is a clear difference in quality between the Premier League and La Liga, making it is fair to say Salah is performing at an equal or higher level against harsher opposition.

Despite this, the nature in which Mo Salah tortured Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire last weekend at Old Trafford, particularly considering the England full backs magnificent resurgent form over the last 18 months, it showcases that any defence in the world should be frightened to the core at the prospect of facing him.

As with any other groups of supporters, Liverpudlians can be rather tribal about the representation of their players and believe players akin to Salah and Van Dijk, rightly so, deserve the recognition as world class talent.

However, as difficult as it may be for rival fans to admit, it is clear as day that currently, Mohamed Salah is the best player in the world at the moment.
