Disney is still set to release new shows like Kenobi, a yet unnamed female-led show, and a second season of The Mandalorian with a third already in development. Games like Jedi Fallen Order have done remarkably so it is likely there will be a sequel. Novels and comics are coming in thick and fast. And the cherry on top is the announcement of yet another movie (yay?) set to be directed and written by our favourite New Zealander, Taika Waititi.
The director of Thor: Ragnarok (2017), JoJo Rabbit (2019), and What We Do in The Shadows (2014) will be co-writing the latest outing in the Star Wars Universe alongside Academy Award nominee Krysty Wilson-Cairns who wrote the screenplay for 1917. And with Taika hot off his Oscar win for the best adapted screenplay, this is definitely a formidable duo to help such a large franchise. However, Taika is no stranger to working with Star Wars as he both starred in The Mandalorian and directed its final episode. So, it might be safe to say he knows what he’s doing and we are more than likely able to get a brilliant movie from him. But do we need one?
With Taika also set to Direct Thor: Love and Thunder, it makes me worried: is this brilliant man doing too much too fast?
With all the content coming out as it is, and the Skywalker Saga just ending I’m feeling a little bit burned out from Star Wars. After the rather disappointing sequel trilogy, I was more than happy for Star Wars to be put on carbonite for another ten years just so I can have a break. Don’t get me wrong I love Star Wars and all the content they are putting out and I am beyond hyped for whatever direction Taika decides to take the beloved franchise but sometimes there can be too much of a good thing. Also with Taika also set to direct Thor: Love and Thunder, it makes me worried: is this brilliant man doing too much too fast?
Then again that could just be me still being salty over the sequels. The Mandalorian and Rogue One go to show that yeah, maybe Disney does know what to do and can tell new and exciting stories. Just please for the love of God, don’t mention Skywalker ever again. I want something new and I am more than confident Taika can deliver.
May the force be with you Taika. You have a massive burden on your shoulders now and if you mess up you’ll have an army of raging nerds after you.
