Netflix’s newest rom-com Love Hard, featuring The Vampire Diaries’ Nina Dobrev and co-star Jimmy O. Yang, took me by surprise on this early November evening as it’s a Christmas film! So, for anyone who refuses to acknowledge the festive season until December, this one may not be for you just yet.

The film opens on a scenic view of LA, sunny as always, but the jingle bells playing in the background immediately launch us into the holiday spirit. The protagonist is Natalie (Dobrev), a love and relationship columnist who writes about her failed Tinder dates and search for 'the one'. When she matches online with the gorgeous Josh with the perfect personality, she takes a leap of faith to surprise him for Christmas. But when she flies out to him, she’s devastated as he looks completely different to his pictures. Drama ensues over the Christmas period cultivating a story about insecurity, fraud, and the search for 'your person'.

Love Hard is a really enjoyable film for a cold, dark Friday night in the run up to Christmas

Unfortunately, as with most rom-coms in this modern age, Love Hard suffers with many moments of cringe and second-hand embarrassment. Also, it follows many classic rom-com tropes like a recently deceased mother (why is that always a thing?) and the ending romantic gestures. It’s a recycled formula: the beautiful female journalist who just can’t seem to find love but will do anything for an article, and her quirky, plus sized best friend who gives the worst advice.

It's a predictable and unrealistic film but there’s something about the cat-fisher, Josh, that was very sweet as he struggles to speak up in his family, alongside his attention-seeking brother played by Harry Shum Jr.

A big criticism personally, without giving away too much, was that the ending didn’t feel believable. The romance between who Natalie ended up with wasn't very genuine on-screen, but it was still a heartwarming ending regardless.

Putting all that aside, though, Love Hard is a really enjoyable film for a cold, dark Friday night in the run up to Christmas; perfect for snuggling up into a blanket and a hot chocolate. It’s a festive, fun and easy watch for when you’re not looking for anything intense. The references to classic Christmas movies like Die Hard and Love Actually make it nostalgic and cheesy in a good way. So, for all those grinches who aren’t feeling the holiday cheer, this movie may make you feel differently!
