The story begins with Dakota Johnson’s character, Lucy, celebrating a streak of successful matches which culminates in a wedding between two of her clients. The wedding reveals details about Lucy’s professional and personal lives, and the central dilemma of the film comes to light; what is more important, money or love?
The film is fun, and stylistically reminiscent of classic, beloved rom coms like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. It balances humour with heartfelt moments, giving it the makings of the perfect rom com. The social commentary on beauty standards, class divisions and the dangers of blind dating (TW sexual violence) was relevant and thought-provoking, though at times lacked subtlety.
Ironically, for a film concerned with going beyond the surface, for me it lacked the depth and heart that keeps a story going around in my mind and makes a film one I will return to again and again. Nonetheless, it works as an engaging and enjoyable night out, but will it become a modern classic? Maybe not.
