Meals I’ve eaten abroad that I still dream about

There's nothing worse than craving a dish that's in another country...

A key part of travelling and going abroad is getting to taste the dishes of those places, and personally, it is one of my favourite aspects of it. In the past few years, three main foods have stuck with me... genuinely haunting my thoughts.

Pasteis de Nata, Portugal

On first thought, I believed that pasteis de nata would be overrated, but upon tasting that soft creaminess in the flaky crust, I was hooked. It is the perfect breakfast, the perfect snack, perfect dessert. Honestly a solid 10 out of 10, would not change anything about it.

Tomato and Basil Pasta, Italy

My absolute favourite pasta sauce that I have ever tasted was in a tiny restaurant full of unmatched furniture and the liveliest crowd of regulars of a random Tuesday night. Homemade fresh pasta, a tomato sauce with the strongest basil flavour I have ever tasted, and shredded pecorino make for the simplest but greatest comfort on a plate. I still dream about it to this day.

Arancini, Italy

On my first trip to Sicily, I tried those comforting balls of flavoured rice and fell in love from the first bite. It is the perfect lunch to take on-the-go when walking around the streets of Italy, enjoying the soft gooeyness of the risotto rice and its traditional ragù filling. My dreams of tasting it again were fulfilled as I worked in an Italian restaurant this summer. Out of my five days of work per week where I could eat whatever I wanted from there, at least three would be arancini days. Heaven.
