Avatar Studios has been announced by ViacomCBS, and safe to say, fans are excited. The new studio will be based entirely around Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, and with the original creators of both series’ on board (Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko), there’s hope that we won’t have another repeat of the travesty that was The Last Airbender.
There hasn’t been new content released on-screen within the Avatar universe since Korra finished in 2014, and with creators DiMartino and Konietzko leaving the team for the Netflix live-action adaptation series, fans are keen to see more original content. Avatar Studios has promised to fill the Avatar-shaped hole in all our hearts with “content spanning animated series and movies based on the beloved world of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.” There has also been mention of short-form content and spin-offs. Avatar Studios’ first film will start production this year – however, there are no plot details released yet.
Exclusive content will be crucial to draw in subscriptions for Nickelodeon and ViacomCBS’ new service, Paramount Plus, and Avatar might just be the key to getting yet another new streaming platform off the ground. There’s plenty to draw from to make new and exciting series for Paramount Plus, whether it’s filling in the gaps of Aang and the gaang’s adult lives, Korra’s adventures with Asami, adapting the comics, or starting fresh with a brand new Avatar, there is so much space for the new studio to explore.
With all the Avatar’s past lives as potential content for a series, in addition to the details included in the comics, there is a lot of potential for the new Avatar Studios. With a little luck, this new studio will return the Avatar world to the screen in the way it most deserves, and give the fans more than just repackaged nostalgia.
