The Banks Group’s Community Fund awarded Hadston House youth and community projects with a £1,000 grant

The grant will help Hadston House support their Meals On Wheels service, which delivers hot meals to local elderly and vulnerable people.

The awarded organisation is a non-profit community centre based in Hadston Morpeth. They provide care and after-school programs plus academic, recreational and cultural activities for children, families and individuals who live in the area.

The charity now has financial support from Banks Group. The business is a family owned miner, land developer and renewables operator based in County Durham.

"We are keen for anyone else who thinks we might be able to help to get in touch"

The Meals On Wheels scheme delivers freshly cooked meals five days a week. Many elderly and vulnerable who live in Hadston, Broomhill, Amble, Widdrington and Ulgham rely on this service for hot meals and dessert for just £4.

Following the outbreak of COVID-19, demand has almost doubled, as elderly people are especially vulnerable and thus cannot risk unnecessary outings. So it is crucial that they remain operating in order to support those who depend on them for their meals.

John Shepherd, project assistant at Hadston House, said: “Before the pandemic, we’d usually deliver around 30 meals every day, but with many residents now shielding in their homes, this figure is up to 50 and we’re expecting to see it rise still further.”

Shepherd urges anyone in need to contact them. “We’ve still got the capacity to increase the number of meals we’re delivering and are keen for anyone else who thinks we might be able to help to get in touch.”

"The Hadston House team is doing fantastic work, and we’re proud to be able to help"

The Banks Community Fund supports community groups, voluntary organisations and environmental projects which benefit the local community near the group's current or proposed developments. The fund’s money originates from the Group’s wind farms, surface mines and property developments across the north of England and Scotland.

Jeannie Raine, Banks Group community relations manager comments: “The Hadston House team is doing fantastic work to support vulnerable local residents, and we’re proud to be able to help those local community groups working to tackle and overcome extremely challenging circumstances.”
