Newcastle University Rugby Football Club has bid goodbye to Director of Rugby Darren Fearn, who has made the jump to Doncaster Knights in the RFU Championship.

Doncaster, who sit at 5th in the second division of English rugby, have appointed Fearne as their new forwards coach following the surprise exit of Doncaster director Steve Boden, a decision which has “sent shockwaves” through the Championship. Lions legend Sir Ian McGeechan has taken over the vacancy left by Boden, and in a bid to revitalise the Knight’s pack, has appointed Fearn to replace the gap Boden’s absence created.

35 year-old Fearn played top flight rugby as prop forward for seven years, with stints at Newcastle Falcons, Saracens, and Sale Sharks. Having started his coaching career at Northumbria, where he successfully guided them to three years in the BUCS Super Rugby League, he made the jump to Newcastle in October 2019.

Upon his appointment, Fearn said, “My goal is to make sure Newcastle University’s rugby programme continues to be successful. I'll do this by building on the good work by Matt Carter and by adding my touch." He continued, “To take this great rugby programme forward, it is crucial to continue supporting and developing our quality players. I know the University players well and my ambition is to help them be their best, both on and off the pitch.”

Newcastle have gone from strength to strength under his guidance, with the Men’s 1st XV making it to the final playoffs for the Super BUCS League earlier

Newcastle have gone from strength to strength under his guidance, with the Men’s 1st XV making it to the final playoffs for the Super BUCS League earlier this month where they lost out to a strong Swansea side. The women’s team has also thrived, now being able to field three competitive and strong starting fifteens. Fearn also heads up the England Students set-up, with no word of whether this will continue alongside his Doncaster duties.
