On the 27th of April, NCL Video Games Society are hosting an e-sports tournament in the NUSU Venue against Northumbria University, with competitions across a variety of games taking place to raise money for charity.
The Newcastle esports teams will go head-to-head with Northumbria in a selection of games including Valorant, League of Legends, Overwatch 2, Rocket League, and Super Smash Bros, with full commentary from the team across all games. Each university will have the opportunity to pick up points across each game, with an overall winner being crowned at the end of the day in this battle of the North East.
The event is being held in collaboration with Intel, NSE (National Student Esports) and Monster, who have sent the society 10 gaming PCs for the day. These will be free to use for anyone at the event in between competitive games, as well as a variety of other consoles the team plans on bringing.
The event will kick off at 12pm and run all the way until 10pm, with a £2 entry fee for visitors that will go to Special Effect, a charity that designs custom controllers for gamers with disabilities.
I asked society president Seth Crowther why they decided to work with Special Effect, who told me “we believe everyone deserves to experience the fun and entertainment that we’ve all got out of playing video games!”
There will be plenty of fun activities throughout the day in between the competitive games for everyone to take part in, and the team from StuBrew will even be coming over later in the day to serve some beers.
