To begin with, the Nintendo Direct opened with the celebration of 40 years of Super Mario and much to everyone’s surprise, a second instalment in the ‘Super Mario Movie’ series was announced, ‘The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’, coming April of 2026.
With this, we see the original cast return to their roles, featuring Jack Black as Bowser, Charlie Day as Luigi, Chris Pratt as Mario, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach.
Alongside the release of the new movie, Nintendo has announced that both Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are coming to the Switch 2 on 25 February 2026, with a HD Remaster.
Throughout the middle portion of the direct, it did become repetitive seeing remasters of games and sequels which have been playable for numerous years on other platforms (such as Hades 2 being released in 2024 and the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade being released in 2020), only just receiving a Switch 2 port in 2026.
Things did seem to pick up in the final 10 minutes of the direct, with a new Pokémon farming simulator, Pokopia and a Danganronpa 2x2 port to the Switch 2 (with added stories) coming in 2026.
It was no surprise, however, that the final game confirmed for Switch 2 was Resident Evil 9. We did get another trailer for the game and even a confirmation of an antagonist (which looks as if he was pulled straight from Outlast).
Along with this, a port of Resident Evil 7 and 8 was also announced for this autumn. So go tell your Aunt Rhody and expect to see some more exciting releases in 2026!
