No Space In Your Suitcase? How to Travel Light

Pack smarter, not heavier...

As someone who likes to spend the least amount of money possible on flights, it comes as an irritating perk that they give you approximately 0.000005% of luggage space to travel with. Although it might seem impossible to pack all of your holiday outfits in a suitcase the size of a small dog, there are a few tricks that can help.
  1. Pack Light

Yes, I know, it’s not what you want to hear. But do you really need three different pairs of denim shorts when you know you’ll only wear one of them? Should you really be packing that one top that you brought ages ago, but have only worn once? Although it can be hard to pack light, be realistic with how many outfits you’ll wear whilst you’re out. It’s also more to carry to your hotel once you’re there, so try to think about how awful it is to carry a heavy suitcase up a large set of stairs. Usually works for me.

  1. Roll, don’t fold

I didn’t think this would make a difference until I tried it, but rolling clothes rather than folding them really does create more room. I’m not a scientist, so I can’t tell you the logic behind it, but rolling clothes together allows you to pack a lot more. You can also roll items like hairbrushes and makeup up in clothes, which allows you even more leeway. Think of it as like a block puzzle but inside your suitcase. Make good use of the empty space!

  1. Wear clothes on the plane!

I’ve definitely done this a few times before. Layering up your summer clothes, although mildly uncomfortable, is a great trick for getting more stuff in your suitcase. Okay, you might look slightly stupid- but who’s paying attention to anyone in the airport anyway? Nine times out of ten, no one will even notice that you’re wearing five different tops underneath your hoodie, and two pairs of leggings as well as your jeans. Just make sure to go to the toilet before you put them on, or you’ll be in for a rough flight.

If worse comes to worst, it might be worth it to fork out that extra money and pay for more luggage. But you might surprise yourself with how much you can fit into a suitcase when you really try - not to mention that it’s more cost-effective, and probably helps the environment by bringing less too! Instead of focusing on how much you have to bring, make sure to enjoy the trip while you’re there. Just remember to leave a little extra room for bringing merchandise back home!
