Having been stuck in what has felt like an endless lockdown, forced to live the same day over and over again in what can only be described as a heavy dose of ‘Groundhog Day’ surrealism, my creative spirit jumped at the chance to do some pottery painting from home!

The Pottery Experience is based in the heart of Jesmond and offers a fun variety of painting and making activities. Despite the studio currently being closed due to the ongoing restrictions, the team have creatively adapted by offering home painting kits which include everything you need to create your very own work of art.

From exotic mermaid ornaments to stacking teapots, there is such a huge, unique selection of pottery pieces to choose from. After much deliberation and as an avid coffee drinker, I decided to go with an adorable owl mug (which, incidentally, adds a touch of character to my kitchen). I then proceeded to choose a mixture of bright paint colours and placed my order online. Within a few days, my home-kit was ready for collection and I popped along to the studio where I was greeted by a friendly member of staff who gave me a beautifully presented paper bag, filled with painting materials and equipment. That very afternoon, I began my pottery painting experience by watching an online demonstration video provided by the team which gave lots of useful tips to help me get started. Whilst listening to the smooth and uplifting sounds of jazz, I spent a few hours getting lost in an artistic tranquillity. With each brush stroke and dab of paint, my ceramic blank owl edged closer towards becoming a fluttering, multi-coloured masterpiece. The final stage was completed by the team back in the studio, who worked their magic by glazing and firing my mug to give it a beautiful glossy finish and I’m absolutely delighted with the end-result!
